How to Get Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for Children with Cerebral Palsy or Brain Injury: Navigating Insurance Denials, Red Tape, and Other Challenges
Console, Richard P., Jr.
Exceptional Parent, v40 n9 p38-39 Sep 2010
Medical professionals who use hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) say that recent studies, as well as anecdotal evidence, indicate that this treatment significantly improves the lives of many children with cerebral palsy and other types of chronic brain injury. So why do many children with these diagnoses not have access to this treatment? Simply put, insurance companies refuse to pay for it. Most families do not have the financial resources to pay for this treatment on their own, nor do they have the knowledge they need to effectively fight insurance denials. Yes, HBOT is expensive and the treatments are often denied, but armed with the right information, a parent doesn't have to take "no" for an answer. Whether one's child gets the treatment and therapy he needs is often a result of how one navigates the system. This article explores what HBOT is, how it works, and steps parents can take to secure treatment for their children.
