The purpose of this study is to provide information on the number and racial composition of students and workers in selected health care professions in the State of Alabama, and to analyze these data. Professions covered include dentistry, dental hygiene, nursing, medicine, medical technology, and occupational therapy. A description of how data were obtained is included. An analysis of the data includes statistical information. Five tables of data supplement this analysis. Conclusions of the study include the following: (1) there is a shortage of blacks in all but the lowest level of the health care professions; (2) the longer the educational process, the smaller the percentage of blacks entering into the profession; (3) training programs in educational institutions have a higher percentage of blacks than at hospitals or in apprenticeship type programs; and (4) at the lower professional levels, blacks have been trained mainly at formerly all black institutions.
