Synthesis of "Meso"-Diethyl-2,2'-Dipyrromethane in Water: An Experiment in Green Organic Chemistry
Sobral, Abilio J. F. N.
Journal of Chemical Education, v83 n11 p1665-1666 Nov 2006
Dipyrromethanes (or dipyrrilmethanes) are important building blocks for many of the structures of interest in the areas of porphyrins, materials science, optics, and medicine. A variety of conditions have been established for the synthesis of dipyrromethanes of diverse structures, from substituted pyrroles to unsubstituted pyrrole and carbonyl compounds. These reactions are generally based on the acid-catalyzed condensation of pyrrole with aldehydes or ketones. In this article, the author describes a laboratory activity for obtaining dipyrromethanes by acid condensation of equimolar amounts of pyrrole and carbonyl compounds in water, under hydrochloric acid (HCl) catalysis.
