College and Career Counseling Training Initiative
Southern Regional Education Board (SREB)
The Southern Regional Education Board's (SREB) College and Career Counseling Training Initiative works to increase the knowledge and skills of counselors who advise students on their postsecondary aspirations. Membership in the initiative provides access to Strategies in College and Career Counseling, a series of online training modules that can improve effectiveness in preparing all students for college--especially those from low-income families who would be first-generation college students. The modules can be used for professional development of middle grades and high school counselors, as well as school principals, teachers who serve as advisors, college admissions counselors, graduation coaches, financial aid advisors, and staff of college advising programs. In addition, they may be used as an academic course as part of a master's degree program in professional school counseling. The modules are designed for online delivery, either as three distinct modules for professional development credit, or as a complete course for academic credit. States also can offer training in either a hybrid or face-to-face approach by using a subset of the modules for in-person professional development workshops. Master's degree programs can use the existing modules, or incorporate content into existing academic courses. This brochure discusses the following modules: (1) Building a College-Going Culture for All Students; (2) College, Career and Academic Planning; (3) Financial Aid and College Applications; and (4) Creating a College-Going Culture in the Middle Grades. A list of participating organizations is included, as well as information on how organizations can join the initiative.
