A camera is an essential tool for human geography students. Most students come back from an overseas fieldtrip, for example, with their camera crammed with images captured on the hoof around their destination. Many of these will find their way into essays, reports and presentations. Photographs are also typically a key element of many human geography dissertations. Studying human geography at university without photographic images would be unthinkable. This article aims to open up the realm of photography as a research method in human geography, to make one think a bit more critically about his/her own use of photography and to show alternative strategies that he/she may not have been aware of.
