Author Julie Pelletier recently became part of a new committee at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights (CMHR): the Indigenous Education Working Group (IEWG). The IEWG is a working group made up of Indigenous individuals with a background in indigenous education. The first project the IEWG undertook was assisting with the development of Indigenous curriculum for middle-schoolers; they will do the same for the early grades and for high school students. The CMHR Indigenous education curriculum includes grade-appropriate materials to assist teachers pre- and postvisit. This is one example of how museums can unveil the imperialist and assimilation project of a settler society with its deadly outcomes for Indigenous peoples. With the guidance and assistance of Indigenous peoples and their allies, what museum visitors see is a diversity of understandings about human rights, with its clashing moments of triumph, and of horror. The author closes by encouraging people to visit the CMHR and experiencing the space in which human rights are described, discussed, and even contested and negotiated. She believes those who visit CMHR can experience an educating discomfort that challenges us all to examine our own location and actions.
