The Interplay of Resources and Multiracialism in Small, Four-Year Residential Colleges: A Study of Perception of Multicultural and Human Resource Directors
Farmer-Hanson, Ashley
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, University of South Dakota
Colleges and universities in the United States need to find ways to meet the needs of the increasing number of multiracial students, faculty, and staff. The purpose of this survey research study was to compare the perceptions of multicultural directors/chief diversity officers and human resource offices about services and systems of support for multiracial individuals. Additionally, this study compared perceptions of females and males, as well as among racial demographics. The survey, an adaptation of CAS Self-Assessment Guide Multicultural Student Programs and Services, was used to obtain data for this study. This survey was sent out to 550 multicultural directors/chief diversity officers and human resource directors using SurveyMonkey® . The data were analyzed using frequencies and "t" tests. A brief summary of the findings indicate that human resource directors and multicultural affairs officers disagree on the perception of services available to multiracial populations on their campuses. Human resources officers tend to report that their institutions met the standards well, while diversity directors mostly contend that the standards were minimally met. Additionally, race played a significant role in this study, while gender did not. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
