The Importance of Self-Determination Theory for Medical Education.
Williams, Geoffrey C.; Saizow, Ronald B.; Ryan, Richard M.
Academic Medicine, v74 n9 p972-79 Sep 1999
Discussion of human motivation contrasts controlled and autonomous motivation, noting that autonomous motivation (self-determination) involves behaving with a sense of volition, agency, and choice. Suggests that medical students who learn in autonomy-supportive teaching and patient-centered environments, which have been associated with more positive health outcomes, are more supportive of patient autonomy and deliver more effective health care.
