Presents biosocial model of human paternal care allowing paternal allocations to be influenced by changes in welfare of recipient offspring and effects on the man's relationship with the child's mother. Results from test of model with adult males in New Mexico are consistent with a role for relationship effort in parental care: men invest more in children of their current mates, even when co-residence with offspring is not a confounder.
