"Reinventing Life": Introductory Biology for a Rapidly Evolving World
Coker, Jeffrey Scott
American Biology Teacher, v71 n5 p281-284 May 2009
Evolutionary concepts are essential for a scientific understanding of most issues surrounding modern medicine, agriculture, biotechnology, and the environment. If the mantra for biology education in the 20th century was, "Nothing in biology makes sense except in the light of evolution," the mantra for the 21st century must be, "Nothing in biology makes sense except in the light of evolution ... and humans are driving evolution!" The "Reinventing Life" curriculum represents the latter idea, thereby providing a theme to merge effective pedagogy, cutting-edge content, and civic engagement. In this article, the author talks about "Reinventing Life" as an introductory biology course for a rapidly evolving world. "Reinventing Life" is a new inquiry-driven course for teaching biology that is focused on the theme of biological change in the 21st century. The "Reinventing Life" course is a step in the direction of thinking more intentionally about the future of life and the prospects of becoming responsible managers of evolution. In this course, students are challenged to address questions about how life changes, how human actions can drive biological change, and the ability of humans to responsibly direct evolution. It is an educational paradigm shift for the purposes of addressing the societal paradigm shifts that will take place over the next few decades. (Contains 1 table.)
