The Magic of Energy: Oil Surely Changed the Way that Humans Value Energy
Deal, Walter F., III
Technology Teacher, v65 n2 p10 Oct 2005
Recently, the price of gasoline seems to keep going up and up with seemingly no limit in sight. Accordingly, the price of a barrel of oil is in excess of sixty dollars today, when just a few years ago it was around twelve to fifteen dollars a barrel. There are many intertwined answers as to why the price of oil and gasoline are increasing. However, it is important to recognize that oil or, more accurately, petroleum and natural gas, represent very flexible and convenient forms of energy and that there is a large demand for them as energy resources. America and all the industrialized nations, as well as many of those in the developing world, depend heavily on the energy of fossil fuels to support their lifestyles and ways of life. People typically think of oil as the major raw material used to produce gasoline. However, it is really just one form of many forms of energy that they use as a fuel for transportation, heating and cooling, and to meet many other energy needs. This article focuses on petroleum and its benefits as an energy source.
