Rewarding and Developing Staff in Higher Education: Outcome of Phase Two. Special Initiative.
Higher Education Funding Council for England, Bristol.
This document provides feedback on the second phase of the initiative to reward and develop staff in higher education. It includes a preliminary analysis of institutions' human resource (HR) strategies and lists the higher education institutions (HEIs) that have submitted strategies classified as full or full with conditions. In 2001, institutions were able to submit an HR strategy for the full 3 years (full) or to make an interim submission (emerging strategy). A total of 109 institutions presented full strategy submissions in June 2002. A team of consultants and staff from the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) reviewed the submissions, and the majority were approved as full strategies, although a significant number included conditions to be fulfilled as part of the HEFCE acceptance. The strategies submitted demonstrated improved HR management practices across the sector as well as improved clarity and focus in the strategies developed. One appendix (annex) lists the institutions submitting full or "full with conditions" strategies, and the others list priority areas for HR development and members of the Advisory Group consulting on this initiative.
