This teaching unit is part of the final report of the Household Hazardous Waste Disposal Project. It consists of activities presented in an introduction and three sections. The introduction contains an activity for students in grades 4-12 which defines terms and concepts for understanding household hazardous wastes. Section I provides activities in which students explore where wastes go and how to make appropriate choices when disposing of wastes. Activity strategies include reading, writing, hypothesizing, problem-solving, map reading, research and computation. Section II contains problem-solving activities in which students act out problems of toxic chemical disposal. Activity strategies include listening, speaking, discussion, debate, problem-solving, group discussion, role playing, and research. Section III contains a series of activities which focus on national issues of hazardous wastes disposal in larger than household quantities and also on laws, regulations, and government responsibility. Activity strategies include values clarification, debate, discussion, analysis, and vocabulary development. The final section contains supplemental activities (such as labelling exercises and chemistry activities) and references. (JN)
