Articulating Junior and Senior High Schools
Koos, Leonard V.
Clearing House: A Journal of Educational Strategies, Issues and Ideas, v79 n5 p205-206 May-Jun 2006
One of the most pressing problems that usually becomes apparent with the spread of junior high schools is that of articulation with both elementary and senior high schools. It is natural that during the introduction of a new unit like the junior high school into an educational system, attention is usually directed almost singly to the grades included by it, rather than to the grades immediately above and below from which those of the new institution are being detached. As such, failures to articulate with grades that precede and follow are often inevitable in the course of curriculum modification. In this article, the author discusses the fundamental criteria involved in coordinating junior and senior high schools. The author also presents the basic aims that should be considered when articulating junior and senior high schools. These aims include: (1) social-civic relationships broadly conceived and including all necessary attention to training for morality and character, religious attitudes, domestic responsibility and leadership; (2) recreation or avocation; (3) physical efficiency; and (4) occupational training.
