Understanding the Experience of CACREP On-Site Visiting Review Team Chairpersons
Minor, Amanda J.
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Idaho State University
Understanding the experience of CACREP on-site review team members provides insight into the phenomenon of four counselor educators who have each served as a CACREP on-site visiting review team chairperson a minimum of three times. In total, the participants had been within the counselor education field for approximately 95 years and active within CACREP for approximately 55 years. Hermeneutic phenomenological qualitative methodology was used to explore the phenomenon. Using this methodology, the researcher's "voice" is also presented within the research. The study consisted of two rounds of individual interviews and a focus group containing all of the participants and the researcher. Within the thematic data analysis, three essential themes were identified: responsibility, human connection, and honesty. Within the essential theme of responsibility, professionalism, preparation, and advocacy were found as sub-themes within the experience. Within the essential theme of human connection, communication and teamwork were found as sub-themes. Within the essential theme of honesty, respect and uncertainty were found as sub-themes. The theme of integrity was also found to encompass the overall experience for each of the four participants. Throughout this study, rigorous means of trustworthiness were used such as a tri-level thematic analysis, triangulation of the data, and reflexivity within the research, written and audio research journaling, and peer debriefings.
