Involving communities in the process of curriculum development may not be novel, but it seems lacking with regard to controversial issues such as lessons on diverse family structures, homosexuality, and other special situations. Disparity in values and convictions can lead one person to support a decision, while another person might hold an opposing opinion on the matter. A select group of individuals who possess opinions on opposite ends of the spectrum cannot be allowed to ignore the silent majority when creating and implementing policy or curriculum. Instead, a process must exist for all people to come together, to discuss their differences in opinion, and ultimately to identify common ground, the basis for all successful compromise. In this paper, the author argues that a process must exist for all stakeholders in a controversial issue to discuss their differences of opinion and identify common ground with regard to the curriculum.
