The "Gay Comfort Level": Examining a Media Advocacy Group's Efforts to Combat Youth Homophobia
Kachgal, Tara M.
Journal of LGBT Youth, v8 n1 p53-65 2011
This article scrutinizes the efforts of a media advocacy group to redress the stigma of youth homosexuality among United States youth: a report published in 2003 by the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation called, "How Youth Media Can Help Combat Homophobia Among American Teenagers." The report, authored by Rodger Streitmatter, concluded that media makers should be encouraged to feature morally-upstanding lesbian, gay, and bisexual youth who struggled to accept their sexuality. Arguing that the report's conclusion concurs with a "politics of assimilation," which ultimately works against the aims of gay rights, an alternative approach is offered through this article, critical media literacy, for challenging youth homophobia.
