Readability of Home Appliance Instruction Manuals: An Assessment with Children.

Using cloze tests on 13 home appliance manuals with 477 children aged 8-17 resulted in mean scores clustered in the 30-40% range. Low comprehension was attributed to either unfamiliarity with technical information, poor reading skills, or poorly written manuals. Recommendations for improving readability to ensure children's safety were made. (SK)
