Evaluation for Excellence in Education. Presentations Given at a Workshop/Seminar (Quebec City, Quebec, Canada, September 15-17, 1985).
Canadian Education Association, Toronto (Ontario).
This collection of nine papers was presented at a workshop on evaluation for excellence in education. "Why Evaluate?" by Madeline I. Hardy, contends that although reform is needed, evaluation must continue in order to measure educational change, bring improvement, and provide public accountability. In "Evaluation for Excellence in Education," Naomi Hersom defines excellence, discusses factors necessary for healthy educational development, and considers the required balance among societal goals. "Educational Evaluation over the Years," by Lionel Desjarlais, traces evaluation as a technology, descibing the directions in which forms of evaluation have evolved. In "The Modern Educational Evaluator," George Podrebarac stresses the need for clear reporting of evaluation results before decision-makers apply findings, which can be guided by six principles. "The Student Evaluation We Have: The Student Evaluation We Need," by Leslie McLean, discusses four ways teachers and administrators can improve communication about student evaluations. Benjamin Levin, in "Excellence, Education, and Evaluation: A Search for the Holy Grail?" demonstrates that a well-conducted evaluation is only one element in advancement. "Effective Teachers--Effective Schools," by Geraldine Gilliss, offers caution concerning traditional evaluation philosophies, tools, and procedures. Judi Bachmann, in "Who Needs Evaluation?" discusses why trustees need evaluation processes to fulfill commitment to excellence. (CJH)
