The Identification and Classification of Graphic Communication Technology.
Fecik, John T.
All graphic reproduction processes are a means of communication. The purpose of this study was to identify and classify common elements of graphic communication technology into a structure representing the various industrial techniques. Six graphic reproduction processes were identified as relief, intaglio, planography, screen process, electrostatic, and holography. Their common elements, viewed as dimensions or stages of production processes, were identified as design, copy generation, image conversion, image carriers, reproduction devices, and finishing operations. These elements were arrived at through a literature review of the development of graphic communication technology and of the evolution of communication from cave drawings to computers. Data for the proposed structure were analyzed, evaluated, and validated by a jury of authorities in the graphic arts industry and in education. A bibliography and material from and about the jury members are included in the thesis. (MF)
