Our Changing Climate
Newhouse, Kay Berglund
Teaching Pre K-8, v37 n5 p52-53 Feb 2007
In this article, the author discusses how global warming makes the leap from the headlines to the classroom with thought-provoking science experiments. To teach her fifth-grade students about climate change, the author starts with a discussion of the United States' local climate. They extend this idea to contrast the local climate with others, such as the deserts of the western United States, the icy, dry Antarctic and the tropical climate of Ecuador. They also have discussions on historic climate, such as ice ages. The author presents 3 demonstrations: (1) how the atmosphere helps warm the earth; (2) how gases mix into the atmosphere; and (3) how melting ice affects water levels.
