South African Teacher Stories. The Past Speaks to the Present and Future

Since 1999 I have worked on an oral history project with teachers who fought apartheid. In this article teacher stories of the past are presented and analysed as models for societal and educational issues of the present and future. Two broad themes are addressed to connect the past to the present: (1) The importance of teachers' recollections of the horrors of apartheid speaking to the present class disparity, racism, and other social, political, and economic issues in South Africa; (2) The educational possibilities of resistance portrayed through the apartheid era teacher stories. Both themes are discussed and analysed throughout the article. The article commences with a discussion of the importance of teacher stories followed by two large sections. "Apartheid/Racism and Class Disparity Today" portrays discrimination and oppression during apartheid by means of teacher stories. Connections are made to class disparity and racism today. The teacher experiences correspond to issues facing society and schools at the present time. "Apartheid Teacher Resistance/Present Possibilities" commences with an analysis of nonracialism as a world view and examines the pedagogical and political lives of teachers. Again, connections are made with the present in the hope that the lives of teachers who fought apartheid might speak to present issues and problems. Finally, the article concludes by reviewing the present societal and educational critiques and advocates the possibilities of apartheid teacher stories as a model for teachers presently addressing class disparity, racism, and other social problems.
