The Multiple-Car Method. Exploring Its Use in Driver and Traffic Safety Education. Second Edition.
American Driver and Traffic Safety Education Association, Washington, DC.
Primarily written for school administrators and driver education teachers, this publication presents information on planning and implementing the multiple car method of driver instruction. An introductory section presents a definition of the multiple car method and its history of development. It is defined as an off-street paved area incorporating a variety of realistic traffic situations which will develop the identification, prediction, decision, and execution abilities of driving. A second section presents guiding principles for planning a multiple car facility, including facility size, cost considerations, site selection and development, facility design, and equipment. A third section provides information on planning and implementing instruction, including an instructional plan and a ten-lesson outline as a sample time allocation plan. An appendix includes diagrams of three different multiple car facilities, brief descriptions of seven practice situations, skills and procedure evaluation check sheet, checklist for evaluation of drivers, and a sample practice driving guide lesson.
