We Were There: Letters from the Battle Front. Postal Pack for Secondary Students.
National Postal Museum, Washington, DC. Education Dept.
This curriculum guide includes letters and postal history from three U.S. wars: the Civil War, World War II, and the Vietnam War. The postal pack was developed with the idea that letters and stamps present personal perspectives that enable students to comprehend the past better. Letters in the postal pack are printed in both the original handwritten form and a typewritten transcript. The pack also provides discussion questions for each letter. It is divided into four sections: (1) "The Civil War: Mail Call"; "The Civil War: Ex Post Facto"; "Letters from the War"; "Envelope Journey: Letters That Dared to Cross a Divided Nation"; (2) "World War II: Mail Call"; "World War II: Ex Post Facto"; "Letters from the War"; "Envelope Journey: Occupied!"; (3) "The Vietnam War: Mail Call";"The Vietnam War: Ex Post Facto"; "Letters from the War"; "Envelope Journey: Envelopes with a Message"; and (4) "Dear Teacher: From One Classroom Teacher to Another"; "Answers to Questions"; "Resources/Credits"; and "Collecting Our History".
