Is This the Paradigm Shift We Need?
Mirvis, Jonathan
Journal of Jewish Education, v78 n4 p305-308 2012
Dr. Woocher's essay, states Mirvis, is seminal in the field of Jewish education. It proposes a new paradigm for Jewish education in North America. This proposed paradigm is supported by a comprehensive multi-disciplinary research drawing on literature from education, philosophy, history, sociology, psychology, and economics. The essay reflects a deep understanding of the field of Jewish education and its current challenges. In this article, the author analyzes a few of the key ideas. If his analysis is correct there are two questions which Dr. Woocher is invited to address: (1) How is it possible to explain the success of "top down" programs such as Birthright, Chabad, and PJ Library? Their recruitment figures are certainly not insignificant. Does their success suggest that there are those who are looking for direction in the wake of the multiple choices available?; and (2) If relevance and meaning are key to education, is it possible to transfer a humanist implicit Judaism to the next generation who may not find relevance and meaning in the Judaism of this generation? This question is not only important for education; it relates to a larger question regarding the essence of Judaism.
