This text examines the economics of education as it exists in the United States. The text begins with a very brief introduction on the history of the financing of education. Then it examines the patterns of educational expenditures from 1960 to 1973, describes the current financial status of education, evaluates the contribution of education to productivity and economic growth, presents and reviews the demand for education as it relates to demographic and economic factors, and examines the supply of educational services as they relate to production costs and marketing. The text concludes with an evaluation of alternative solutions to the problem of financing education. An annotated bibliography is included at the end of each chapter. (Author/DN)
