The purpose of this study was to (a) identify factors contributing to the success of Hispanic students in four Early College High Schools (ECHSs) in El Paso County, (b) identify components of the ECHSs that can be realistically considered for implementation by administrators of larger public high schools in El Paso County, and (c) determine whether there are unique challenges related to education along the U.S./Mexico border and how ECHSs might be addressing these challenges. The study used a mixed-methods (qualitative and quantitative) model with concurrent triangulation. The guiding question for the study was, What are the unique components of ECHSs along the border that are creating success stories for Hispanic students to continue to higher education? The background of the problem included (a) statistics about the overall Hispanic population and the Hispanic student population in the United States, Texas, and El Paso County; (b) unique challenges regarding dropout rates for the city and county of El Paso; (c) Early College High School Initiative (ECHSI) educational reform efforts sponsored by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation; and (d) a brief explanation of the ECHS. The literature review includes (a) a condensed 20th-century chronological history of the movement of Hispanics (Mexicans) from Mexico to the United States, (b) historical practices and treatment of underrepresented students in the U.S. education system, (c) background and description of ECHSs and the ECHSI under the Gates Foundation, (d) demographics of El Paso County, (e) public education in El Paso County, (f) implementation of the ECHSI in El Paso County with establishment of four ECHSs in partnership with El Paso Community College (EPCC). A survey regarding academic experiences in the ECHS was completed by 171 Hispanic junior-level students at four ECHSs in El Paso County. The data were analyzed and emerging themes are reported, followed by practice implications and recommendations for future research.
