While specific subjects vary, the theme of this collection of seven articles is the nonformal education of adult migrants in India. The first article documents several aspects of adult education activities undertaken by Mobile Creches for Working Mothers' Children, an organization providing integrated day care for the children (from birth through age 12) of low-income women working on construction sites and in resettlement colonies. Much of this article and others in the collection focuses specifically on the problems, likelihood, and successes of literacy education programs. The second article describes difficulties in conducting research to evaluate programs for migrants. The third article questions the belief that adults should first be taught to read in their mother tongue, while the fourth article describes adult education for social change that involves awareness groups organized to obtain redress of injustices. A nonformal adult literacy project serving, among others, Moslem women and girls generally restricted to their homes (in "purdah") is described in the fifth article. The sixth article discusses the efforts and successes of forest people who organized a social movement to protect the environment of the Himalayas from further exploitation. In conclusion, activities of the "People's Messenger" theater group, the communication arm of Mobile Creches, are described in the seventh article.
