High-Priority Professional Development Needs Identified by ASCA Presidents/Presidents-Elect (1986-87).
Comas, Robert E.; And Others
The 1986-1987 American School Counselor Association (ASCA) Research Committee identified as one of six goals the identification of two topics of high professional development need for school counselors and distribution of bibliographic information on these two topics. To achieve this goal, ASCA presidents and presidents-elect (N=31) completed questionnaires containing 119 potential professional development needs. The results of the survey were summarized and 14 top priority (rank-ordered) needs were selected by respondents. A questionnaire containing this rank-ordered list of 14 needs was sent to 52 ASCA presidents/presidents-elect who were asked to select the top two needs. Feedback was also received from 35 counselors in the field. "Evaluation of counseling effectiveness" was ranked highest on the total list (N=87), highest on the presidents/presidents-elect list, and fourth on the counselor list. "Small group counseling" was ranked second on the total list, first on the counselor list, and third on the presidents/presidents-elect list. Three techniques were used to create bibliographies on these two topics: (1) a survey of selected journals; (2) an Educational Resources Information Center (ERIC) database search; and (3) responses from ASCA presidents/presidents-elect. (The selected bibliographies created from these techniques are included in the areas of evaluation of counseling guidance effectiveness and small group counseling.) (NB)
