Thinking outside the Box: Placing Park and Recreation Professionals in K-12 Schools
Dustin, Daniel; Hibbler, Dan; McKenney, Alexis; Blitzer, Laura
Journal of Physical Education, Recreation & Dance (JOPERD), v75 n1 p51 Jan 2004
The authors argue that it is time to place park and recreation professionals in K-12 schools on a permanent basis. Their proposal is based on the following observations: (1) school facilities are grossly underutilized; (2) the majority of a child's life takes place outside the classroom; (3) park and recreation programs are effective "hooks" for getting and holding children's attention for all kinds of educational purposes; (4) park and recreation professionals have considerable teaching and counseling experience; (5) park and recreation professionals understand the importance of educating the whole child; and (6) the synergistic possibilities are far-reaching. The authors conclude their proposal by describing an existing Florida program and calling for others like it to better serve the needs of all children.
