Bobby Fong: Man on a Mission
Fong, Colin
Liberal Education, v100 n4 Fall 2014
Bobby Fong, was president of Ursinus College until his death in September 2014 and is the only person to have served twice as chair of the AAC&U Board of Directors. In this article, his son Collin presents remarks made at the memorial service for his father. Collin describes his father as a man with a mission, and that mission was to make the world better through the education and development of the students for which he was responsible. Fong reminded those in attendance that his father believed to his very core that liberal education is the key to addressing the challenges society faces, and he went to college administration because he wanted to shape an environment that pushes all young people to realize their own potential- potential that will help resolve the challenges of tomorrow. Bobby Fong wanted his students to be comfortable with people from all cultures, from different religions, from all walks of life, and lived for the success of those whose lives he touched. Colin also said that his father, worked tirelessly for the betterment of his college, his community, and promoted tolerance, compassion, and the ability to empathisize with others as the cornerstones of liberal education.
