Heuman, Amy N.; Simmons, Jake; Kinane, Ryan D.; Stow, Brandon D.
Communication Teacher, v22 n3 p66-70 Jul 2008
The intercultural communication course offers a unique space for the introduction of pluralistic realities and lived experiences. Intercultural communication instructors are faced with the formidable task of facilitating a course that provides an outlet for exploring complex information related to the negotiation of cultural identities and value systems. This article presents an activity which involves students participating in constituting identities through public performances of cultural others. This activity aims to assist instructors facilitating a classroom climate that encourages students to embrace the pluralistic realities beyond their own lived experience. This assignment also points to cultural identity as a continuing negotiation of performative and communicative acts embedded in historical, cultural, political, and social systems.
