Life's Journey Leads to Founding a Company
Richardson, Ginny
Exceptional Parent, v36 n8 p50-51 Aug 2006
This profile highlights Dawn Zibricky, who founded Provide Care for Life. Its mission is to "embrace the journey of families living with and caring for an individual with special needs. Through partnership and collaboration, Provide Care for Life helps families meet the future with security, dignity and grace." This organization was the culmination of a Zibricky's interests as a girl, her education, career experiences, and her extraordinary personal life. It also resulted from her twenty years of nursing in the special needs community and from her experience as a mother to her autistic 13-year-old son. As a trainer of autism in the State of Illinois, Zibricky learned about Person Centered Planning (PCP), a discovery process that allows a person with a special need to express what he or she envisions their future will look like. In using both PCP and the McGill Action Planning System (MAPS) with families, Zibricky realized that documentation was the key component that was missing in working with individuals with special needs. The four components are: Listening to the individual and discovering what is important to him or her, a multidisciplinary approach, the process of making a plan and finally -- documentation. Knowing that there is an urgent need among caregivers for planning and documentation enabled Zibricky to found her organization and create a comprehensive virtual online reference called the Provide Care Journal, used for scanning medical information, legal documents, and activities of daily living.
