The Emergence of Early Intervention for Children with Hearing Loss in China
Shenglin, Liu; Raver, Sharon A.
Journal of the International Association of Special Education, v12 n1 p59-64 Spr 2011
In the last decade, China began developing early intervention services for very young children with hearing loss, and their families. This article presents a broad description of some of these programs, including the national rehabilitation networks for speech and hearing training, increased attention on the development of professionals, the introduction of newborn hearing screening, increased assistance to children from disadvantaged families for receiving hearing aids and cochlear implants, and increased attempts to integrate speech and hearing services into preschool programs for children with typical hearing. Implications of these efforts are discussed. (Contains 1 figure.)
