Educational Facilities: Planning, Modernization, and Management. Third Edition.
Castaldi, Basil
Written for both students and practitioners, this book is a comprehensive treatise on the planning, remodeling, and maintenance of educational facilities. The subject matter is organized to blend theory and practice. Part I deals primarily with theory, principles, and techniques of educational facilities planning, covering school building history, psychological discoveries, current educational practices, and developments in educational technology as they affect school architecture. Part II discusses procedures and criteria for long-range planning, including chapters on school building surveys, planning procedures, and foundations and principles. Part III further explores basic elements of educational facilities planning, such as flexibility, adaptability, adequacy, efficiency, economy, energy conservation, safety, health, comfort, and acoustical and visual environments. Part IV has three chapters on planning school and college facilities and a chapter on postplanning procedures and construction costs. Part V tackles modernization, maintenance, and operation of educational facilities. Included are numerous tables as well as two appendices that deal with these topics: (1) making an enrollment projection; and (2) determining the approximate location and capacity of new construction.
