Effect of Health Literacy on the Utilization of Advance Directives Based on the Health Belief Model
Henkelman, Wallace J.
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Argosy University/Phoenix
Research has demonstrated that only a small proportion of individuals in the United States complete advance directives as part of their planning for end-of-life care. This study sought to determine if health literacy is a significant factor in advance directive completion as has been posited by previous researchers. Analysis of the data collected from a survey completed by a random sample of residents of Henderson, Nevada of their responses to a health literacy quiz indicates that no significant relationship exists between level of health literacy and advance directive completion. Further analysis indicated the existence of significant correlations between gender, age, and marital status and advance directive completion. Specifically, individuals who are female, over age 35, and/or married were more likely to have advance directive than are those who are male, under age 35, and/or unmarried. The major implication of these findings is that educational efforts to increase advance directive completion should be targeted at men, individuals under age 35, and unmarried individuals.
