Principal Leadership, v10 n2 p30-34 Oct 2009
Of the many responsibilities of a high school principal, overseeing the athletics program is one of the most difficult and potentially headache-inducing because of the thorny nature of the conflicts that arise. Sports-related controversies often are time-consuming and difficult to resolve, and they put a huge strain on relationships, public confidence, and the ties that bind the administrative team in a building and a district. Principals have a duty to "mentally supervise"--even if they're not physically present--to ensure the health, safety, conduct, and equitable participation of the students and the reasonable promulgation of the rules. One area that seems to pose particular difficulty involves students' drug or alcohol violations that affect their eligibility to participate in student athletics. The authors discuss how to avoid all controversies involving school sports and provide eligibility guidelines to help principals maintain school and community support for making the right decisions.
