Witschonke, Christopher
Middle School Journal (J3), v37 n3 p4-11 Jan 2006
This article deals with the use of alternative texts, such as the Harry Potter book series in classroom teaching. In this article, the author discusses a wide range of themes that could be addressed in the classroom. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone deals with issues of greed, self-sacrifice, fear of the unknown, and self-confidence. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets explores the theme of pride and prejudice. The third book, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, deals with issues of revenge, justice, and mercy. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire deals with pride, prejudice, and adds the power of the media and aids students in gaining historical understanding. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix allows students to further explore the issues of racism and the power of the media, as it helps them deal with personal identity. In this article, the author presents a class simply titled Hogwarts that was offered to the students of Cornerstone Academy, a middle school in Houston, Texas. This class used the Harry Potter book series as a vehicle to aid students in the study of history, current events, and life all around them. (Contains 1 figure.)
