Training Assistants for Special Kids T.A.S.K.: Training for Paraprofessional Personnel for Work with Moderately/Severely/Profoundly/Multi-Handicapped Youngsters.

Presented is a training program for paraprofessional personnel serving as classroom assistants with multi-handicapped mentally handicapped school-age children. It is noted that this model training packet, T.A.S.K. (Training Assistants for Special Kids) was developed by Cold Spring School, Indianapolis, Indiana, for training of their special education aides. Described is a 1-day preservice session, including a description of the school with a slide-tape presentation; explanation of the classroom assistants' duties; and school employment practices. Seven inservice sections are provided, each including purpose, objectives, procedures, a general session for all trainees, two unit sessions (one for experienced personnel and one for inexperienced personnel), and a guide to session evaluation. Covered in the inservice sections are the following topics (sample subtopics in parentheses): (1) "Who We Serve" (characteristics of mentally handicapped students), (2) "Help--Seizures" (etiology and treatment of epilepsy), (3) "Playing It Safe" (wheelchair safety, feeding, and dressing), (4) "Classroom Assistants and Professional Staff as a Team" (roles of support staff), (5) "Love, Security, Discipline" (behaviors and reinforcers), (6) "Motor Sense" (gross and fine motor skills), and (7) "Happiness is Communication" (language development).
