Post High School Transition: A Handbook for Documenting Pre-Vocational and Transition Experiences That Occur during High School
Izadi Calabrase, Clara
ProQuest LLC, Psy.D. Dissertation, Alliant International University
In recent years the issue of how well students with disabilities are prepared for post high school opportunities has generated interest in designing more effective transition programs in school districts. Employment rates for students with disabilities after leaving high school are greatly impacted by their experiences and opportunities to develop pre-vocational skills. Students who are seeking post-secondary education or trade school are also impacted by their ability to access the skills necessary prior to leaving high school. For many students with disabilities it is key to document job related experiences and trainings prior to leaving high school so they have the resources necessary to step into adulthood as well as to fulfill their goals once they have left high school. This project examined the skills students with disabilities would benefit from if exposed to prior to leaving high school. This project utilized research findings to develop a handbook for students that allows them, as well as the IEP team, to document experiences with job related activities and interests as they travel through their high school years and serve as a reference as students pursue post high school goals. The handbook will allow students to begin to focus their efforts during their school years to increase the likelihood of success after high school. This research and handbook facilitates a more productive transition towards post high school goals. This handbook provides a resource for teachers and students to allow for active participation of students in transition planning. The handbook will be made available to local school districts and will be presented at the Transition Conference.
