Visual Supports for the Learning Disabled: A Handbook for Educators
Sells, Leighan
ProQuest LLC, Ed.Psych.D. Dissertation, Alliant International University
A large percent of the population is affected by learning disabilities, which significantly impacts individuals and families. Much research has been done to identify effective ways to best help the students with learning disabilities. One of the more promising strategies is the use of visual supports to enhance these students' understanding of an educational and/or behavioral task. This project sought to help educators better understand and utilize visual supports to enhance the classroom learning environment for their students with learning disabilities. "Visual Supports for the Learning Disabled" is a handbook developed for this project and designed to provide information essential for teachers to utilize during a school day. The handbook contains information on visual supports, including illustrated strategies such as calendars, task organizers, transition helpers, and interventions which can be used by both general education and special education teachers. Reviewed by experts and field testers, the handbook was reported to be user-friendly, simple, and likely to be implemented by teachers and/or staff. It is hoped that this handbook will be used by teachers and educational consultants who want to increase visual supports in the classroom. Continued development includes expanding this handbook throughout the district and the Imperial County Office of Education.
