COPE: A Systematic Approach to the Evaluation of Academic Departments.
Smock, Richard; Hake, Harold
The evaluation of academic departments at The University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign campus is described. Guidelines have been established by the Council on Program Evaluation (COPE), which is composed of faculty, graduate, and undergraduate students. The self evaluation is conducted within the department, and the results are analyzed by COPE, which makes recommendations to the appropriate administrator. Surveys are completed by students, faculty, and departmental administrators. All student majors in the departmental program complete the Program Evaluation Survey, which provides information about departmental procedures and quality of the program. Faculty are asked to evaluate the performance of department heads, and to describe their perceptions of morale factors, departmental procedures, and the effect of outside administrators' actions on the department.
