Multi-Generational Learning: Developing Informed Advocates and Active Children
Carson, Linda M.
Teaching Elementary Physical Education, v15 n2 p13-15 Mar 2004
The creation of multifaceted, multigenerational programs in college communities could create a ripple effect of advocacy for physical education with students and parents becoming agents for change in their own families, communities, cultures, and professions. This article describes community-based physical activity programs at West Virginia University. A unique characteristic of the WVU programs is the dual learning environments in which early childhood movement challenges related to the curriculum are offered. Families can choose to participate in the gym, or the pool, or even both environments during a single visit to campus. Both the gym and the pool classes are designed to develop the same four categories of awareness: action, effort, space, and relational. These foundational movement experiences are essential for successful participation in future childhood games, recreational activities, and sports.
