Competency-Based Hiring Interviews and University Teaching Performance
Ellis, Jerald K.
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Barry University
The purpose of this study was to determine if a pre-hire structured interview with competency-based behavioral questions can be linked to the teaching performance ratings of faculty at member institutions of the Florida State University System (SUS). Insights gained from this investigation can support the initiative for a proactive Human Resource Development (HRD) role in the identification and screening of faculty within the SUS during the pre-hire interview. A relationship between competency-based behavioral questions in the pre-hire interview and faculty teaching performance can be used to strengthen the recommendation for inclusion of such inquiry in the hiring process at member institutions. A quantitative non-experimental investigation into the association between the competency-based behavioral inquiry in the pre-hire interview and faculty teaching performance was conducted in an ex-post-facto design study using a subset of publically available personnel data from 76 faculty members hired from the 2008-2011 time periods at Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU). Binomial coding of the interview questions promoted levels of competency-based inclusion that were compared with the mean faculty performance data measured by the State University System Student Assessment of Instruction (SUSSAI) scores. The data have been analyzed using a single factor ANOVA with significant findings leading to a Tukey-Kramer post-hoc analysis.
