The 2003 Music in Our School's Month and World's Largest Concert Teacher's Guide.
Music Educators National Conference, Reston, VA.
On March 13, 2003 millions of school children, teachers, and citizens from around the world participate simultaneously in the "World's Largest Concert" (WLC). This concert, a sing-along program, is broadcast on PBS and the Armed Forces Radio and Television Network overseas. Participating in the WLC is a way to celebrate Music in Our Schools Month. It is estimated that more than eight million people joined in last year. As the number of participants grows, so does the impact on the public's awareness of school music programs. The 2003 WLC theme "Connect with Music" focuses on the ways in which music connects people to many aspects of life, and how those connections can be used to reach out to others to increase awareness of the benefits of music. This 19th annual WLC presents music that encourages connecting with others through fun, interdisciplinary activities and lessons in mathematics, science, history, and culture. This teacher's guide consists of four sections: (1) "Introduction and Concert Program"; (2) "Letter from Willie L. Hill, Jr., MENC President"; (3) "Letter from Henry Juszkiewicz, CEO, Gibson Guitar Corp. and Baldwin Piano Co."; (3) "Lesson Plans" (Lesson 1: Land That We Love; Lesson 2: Una Luna Brilla; Lesson 3: Turn the Beat Around; Lesson 4: Mmangwane; Lesson 5: Where Do the Stars Go?; Lesson 6: M. T.'s Sage Advice; Lesson 7: Picnic of the World; Fun Page; and Coloring Page). (BT)
