The College President's Critical Role in Modeling Assessment: A Lesson in Leadership by Example
Somera, R. Ray D.
Assessment Update, v19 n1 p9-11 Jan-Feb 2007
The college president's role in supporting and promoting student learning outcomes and institutional assessment is a herculean one. At Guam Community College (GCC), the president has been performing a crucial role in setting an assessment example for the rest of the college community since he took office on June 16, 2001. Seeking to model an assessment process for all his constituents, at the end of his first year, he agreed to be a guinea pig in a campus-wide survey-based evaluation of his performance. This leadership by example proved to be the critical impetus that propelled the college's comprehensive assessment initiative, and six years thereafter, a culture of evidence has gained a stronghold at the institution.
