At the Punana Leo everyone, "'Anakala", uncle--a male teacher, "'Anake," aunty--a female teacher, and the "keiki," children all play important roles in the educational program of the school. Each and all are responsible for the learning that takes place and the success of the program. In this article, the author describes the Punana Leo, the only total Hawaiian language immersion preschool program in Hawai'i and in the world. Punana Leo is not merely a preschool, but also a way of life, a family-based program founded on Hawaiian identity and the way of the elders. Since men have always played an important part in Punana Leo (males make up about 21% of the total staff), the author also discusses Nelson's (2004) eight myths about men who work with young children, debunks these myths, and reinforces the importance of men in the lives of young children.
