Teen Chick Lit
Meloni, Christine
Library Media Connection, v25 n2 p16, 18-19 Oct 2006
For young teen girls, reading has become hot again. With their appealing covers, witty heroines and humorous plots, teen chick lit books are bringing girls out of the malls and into local libraries and bookstores in search of the next must-have title. These fun books are about boys, friendship, family, fitting in, and growing up. What makes the teen chick-lit genre so popular is that girls have found a way to escape into a fantasy where they see themselves and their friends as the characters. There are two distinct categories of teen chick lit: the original humorous kind that began with "Bridget Jones's Diary" and privileged lit such as "The Devil Wears Prada." Humorous chick lit features real girls teens can relate to. The characters are flat-chested (or too curvy), struggle to fit in at school, and are embarrassed by their families. Although privileged chick-lit books have similar plots, they are exclusively about wealthy beautiful girls who live in exciting places, wear trendy clothes, and date hot guys. However, even with the great number of new titles published each season, most teen chick lit is about Caucasian girls. If literature should be a mirror as well as a window, then girls from every background and nationality should be able to read escapist novels that they can imagine themselves in. A list of recommended teen chick-lit books for middle school, junior high, and high school is presented.
