The topic of defensiveness resonates with students, who are generally eager to learn how to prevent it. Gibb's taxonomy of defensive/supportive behaviors is widely published and used today. According to Gibb, defensiveness occurs when a communicator puts substantial effort into defending him/herself from a perceived communicative threat. This article presents an activity in which students will identify communication behaviors that produce defensiveness and will offer suggestions for supportive communication alternatives. In this activity, the teacher will teach Gibb's taxonomy using Augusto Boal's "Forum Theatre," a type of performance in which audience members improvise solutions to a problem scenario. Specifically students will have the opportunity to recognize examples of Gibb's six categories of defensive/supportive communication, and the challenge of inventing supportive alternatives in place of defense-provoking statements.
