Revising School Attack Protections since 9/11
Black, Susan
Education Digest: Essential Readings Condensed for Quick Review, v70 n1 p4-8 Sep 2004
The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, prompted federal officials to step up campaigns to make schools safe. After visiting Ground Zero at New York City's World Trade Center, Education Secretary Rodney Paige sent each chief state school officer suggestions for managing school crises. Many states also have school safety plans in place. New York's Safe Schools Against Violence in Education (SAVE), a 2000 law, requires school districts to develop and maintain safety plans at the district and building levels. Here, the author discusses how the state Education Department guides school officials for school safety. Perhaps no school crisis plan can be absolutely perfect. Thus, school boards, legislators, government officials, and others responsible for crisis management have a responsibility to make sure their plans are based on the best information possible.
